For 75 years, Phillips Screw has been synonymous with innovation, quality and
Phillips screw leadership. Since the 1930's, when Henry Phillips introduced a new screw to America's manufacturing industries, the Phillips drive system has been the gold standard for efficient fastener technology. Everyone has used Phillips screws, but not everyone knows the story of Henry Phillips. How did the Phillips Screw become a household name? It began in the 1930's, when America's manufacturing industries were beginning to mass-produce and factories were looking for more efficient methods of working. The traditional slotted screw was becoming a barrier to this efficiency, due to alignment time and "cam-out", when the driver slipped out of the slot and inevitably damaged the screw and often the component as well.

Recognizing a necessity, an inventor named J.P. Thompson teamed with an engineer named Henry Phillips, and in 1934 introduced a new, cruciform-recessed screw. These new fasteners were superior to slotted screws and significantly reduced cam-out and drive time. Henry bought the rights to patent the system, formed his own company, and the Phillips screw was born.

American industries, especially automotive, quickly converted to the Phillips system. (In 1937, the Cadillac Division of General Motors began assembling all its models with Phillips screws.) During World War II there was even more demand for Phillips Screw products, and by the time Henry retired in 1945, more than 85% of international screw manufacturers were licensed to produce the Phillips system.

Tip of Phillips screwdriver The Phillips Screw success story continues, with the issuance of dozens of trademarks and patents, the use of Phillips Screw fastening technology on the space shuttle, and the development in 1978 of an improved cruciform drive system called ACR®, short for Anti Cam-out Ribs. The system features ribbed mating surfaces on both the screw and driver, eliminating damaged screws, tools and surfaces, while providing sure engagement. This allows for increased torque, reduced worker fatigue, and extended drive tool life.

Now the general consumer and do-it-yourselfer can have the same advantage as do commercial industries, in products such as floating Phillips head screwdrivers, ratchets, hand tools, Phillips head screw assortments, butane cordless soldering irons, cordless wood burning tools / kits, marine tool kits and other products through our new business unit, Phillips Screw Innovation.

ThermaCELL® Technology

Butane cartridges for cordless soldering iron and other products Phillips Screw Innovations is also proud to offer the Patented ThermaCELL® technology. ThermaCELL® utilizes a butane cartridge to provide an energy source that surpasses rechargeable batteries in run-time, performance and residual environmental safety. This technology makes Phillips Screw cordless portable tools easy to use anywhere: provides a long run-time compared with rechargeable batteries: and, makes them a safe and dependable high-energy source.
